Oral health in preschool children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A bibliographic review
Keywords:
Autism Spectrum Disorders, oral health, childrenAbstract
Objective: To recognize the most prevalent oral conditions in preschool children with Autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Material and Methods: In the Pubmed database, an advanced search was carried out with the keywords "Autism spectrum disorders", "oral", "health" and "children", selecting all studies published in the last 5 years and filtering by age (preschool children, between 2 and 5 years of age). Posteriorly, another search was made in the Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source (EBSCO) database, using the terms “Autism Spectrum Disorders”, “children” and “oral health”, including articles published since 2015.
Results: A total of 75 articles were located. After excluding 5 duplicates and reviewing titles and abstracts, 15 articles were selected. Finally, after full reading, 14 articles were included in this review.
Conclusion: Preschool children with ASD present a greater predisposition to periodontal diseases, soft tissue lesions, and dentomaxillary anomalies, associated with the characteristics of the condition that make oral care difficult. It is relevant to create and disseminate prevention strategies that make it possible to reduce the occurrence or severity of these conditions and reinforce the need for regular dental check-ups that allow early detection of oral pathologies.
